Center Church's governing structures find their
genesis in the will of the congregation; hence, we are a congregational
church. Decisions
needing to be made that have a significant effect on the congregation
are brought to the congregation for discussion and, if necessary,
a vote. These sorts of decisions include calling ministers,
adopting an annual budget, adopting policy changes, or the purchase
or sale of property.
Each year, a nominating committee proposes a slate
of names to fill various positions that help the organization to
run as best it can. The
representative body of the congregation is called the "Prudential
Committee," a council-like body that includes the church officers
(moderator, vice-moderator, treasurer, clerk, and historian), representatives
from the four standing church "Boards" (Deacons, Stewards,
Christian Education, and Outreach), at-large representatives, and
ministerial staff. There are
numerous "Committees" that assist and report to the appropriate
Board(s) and/or the Prudential Committee.
The Prudential Committee may itself appoint special
committees or task forces to undertake certain tasks or research
potential policy directions for the church. These committees usually
have a defined charge and are dismissed, with thanks, upon completion
of their work.
Church members and friends who have interests
in special areas or sense a need to develop a ministry to a new
group of persons are encouraged to speak with the minister about
forming a group. Such
endeavors usually receive the support and encouragement of at least
one Board and the Prudential Committee.
