Purpose
Music and the Arts at Center Church offers the highest quality
music and art, from a variety of traditions and performers, to the Greater
Hartford region.
The program exists to do three things: provide
cultural enrichment, arts education, and increased visibility for Center
Church and its programs.
History
Since the nineteenth century, Center Church has been an important
place for musical and artistic expression. While serving as a house of worship,
the current Meeting House (built in 1807) was the city's first concert and
lecture auditorium. A tradition of concerts, both as parts of a series and
as stand-alone events, continues to this day through Music and the Arts at
Center Church. These events, open to all and often presented free-of-charge
or with the request for a donation, include classical, jazz, folk, and ethnic
music as well as drama and dance.
